トモちゃんは女の子!{Wk 13}
"Tomo-Chan is a Girl!" is a really funny and cute Slice-of-Life, romance anime that tackles the weird relationships between tomboyish girls and their male friends especially when they fall in love. I really loved this anime because the characters are all so adorable and unique with their own personalities that are heavily exaggerated in comparison to real life. The show has a muscle-headed redhead, a ditzy blonde, an edgy black-hair, and the love interest. What makes the anime all the more addicting is the animation style and voice actors who perfectly portray the personalities of each characters. The show does a 180 in comparison to most romance anime that have those four characters as 3 guys being friends and one girl being one of the guys love interest. However, we follow Tomo-chan as she pursues love from a very roundabout way since she isn't as 'girly' as the other girls she knows.
If I were to look at my knowledge of Japanese culture, I'd definitely say that this anime follows against the norm of Japanese beauty standards but at the same time uses that standard to propel such an amazing love story. Most Japanese women achieve the beauty standard by having slender legs, a thin waist, a small face, and a soft polite manner to their way of speaking. This anime shows how Tomo-chan can't properly follow those beauty standards but she is still capable of finding love in her own way. Moving away from Tomo-chan's story for a second, a common plot that I see in some anime is that there are sometimes characters who marry within the family and I wonder whether it is because they see the blonde hair and blue eyes as the inter-family marriage noticed in European culture or just something that Japanese people like as it is unfamiliar to them.
